Sub-Urban Roof integrates traditional suburban residential conditions onto the roof of the Memorial City Mall producing a new lifestyle that reinterprets the traditionally urban idea of ‘city within a city.’

The single family home has been a dominant living condition in Memorial City since the 1950s, and can remain intact after rapid urbanization. A ‘city within a city’ does not always require an urban form; it can be produced with the hybridization of the two existing suburban conditions of residential subdivisions and shopping malls. The manipulation of small town Americana can further support this redefinition of the urban concept of living above the store.
